After more than two years of courtship, Paul R. Jones donated his vast collection of African-American art to the University of Alabama. The new stewards of the $4.8 million collection plan to display pieces on campus and loan works to other universities and museums. “It’s significant beyond measure,” said Robert Olin, dean of the Colleges of Arts and Sciences at a news conference Tuesday. “We’ve only begun the possibilities this gift brings.”…

Recycling numbers soar

…The amount of recyclable materials collected on the University’s campus has more than doubled over the past year, according to a press release the University sent to students last Wednesday. The University saw a 151 percent increase in recycled goods from October 2007 to September 2008. 468 tons of recyclables were collected, compared to 186 tons one year ago…
SGA tells students of off-campus housing rights

The SGA and the newly created Landlords Leases and Legalities committee are working hand-in-hand to ensure students are being treated fairly when renting apartments and homes off campus. “We recreate one committee per year,” SGA Executive Vice President Allen Ross said. “This year, we’re working hard to develop a presentation and panel of speakers to address possible issues faced by students when living off campus and the appropriate measures to take when their rights are violated.”…
Miss UA program invites candidates

Students who would like to participate in the Miss University of Alabama program are invited to a candidate interest meeting at 3 p.m. Sunday in Alumni Hall. The student named 2009 Miss UA will receive a full tuition scholarship, two book scholarships and other gifts for her year of service to the university. The Miss UA program is a preliminary contest for the Miss Alabama pageant and the Miss America program.
