Noted writer Barry Hannah returns to UA

…Hannah has a new book coming out in the spring, and will make a “grand return” to Tuscaloosa tonight, to read at the Bama Theatre. “It’s been a long time,” said Michael Martone, chair of UA’s creative writing program, “at least since I’ve been here, and that’s 12 years now.”…“He writes the way birds sing and fish swim. Nobody really does things with language the way he does,” Beidler said. “Any writer that people read seriously writes about people trying to figure out how to behave decently in the world. And that’s what Barry does. His narrators are just poor, dumb-luck, befuddled, but god, they got hearts full of love…Don Noble, another longtime UA professor, interviewed Hannah for his “Bookmark” public television series, and is including some of his work in the upcoming anthology “A State of Laughter — Comic Fiction from Alabama.” Hannah’s new book is apparently about Gulf War veterans who burn churches in Mississippi. “They are distressed characters,” Noble said…
Stimulus checks help push state personal income up

…That’s why Ahmad Ijaz, an economic researcher for the University of Alabama, said folks shouldn’t read too much into the state’s high ranking in personal income growth. The checks did more to boost income levels in poorer states, he said. “Income growth in Alabama has always been below the U.S. growth,” he said. “Our per capita income is around 85 percent of U.S. per capita income, while that of Connecticut is at 138 percent of U.S. Therefore, the tax rebate check will obviously have a much higher impact on Alabama’s income growth than in a state like Connecticut.”…

Museums lure locals with free admission Saturday

…Tuscaloosa’s area museums will have free admission that day, courtesy of the Tuscaloosa Convention and Visitors Bureau, the city of Tuscaloosa and the Tuscaloosa Area Museums Association…If there is a big community response to Family Fun Day, it will become a yearly event, said Ken Gaddy, director of the Bryant Museum. “Sometimes kids get to go places and parents don’t go, but here is a chance for the whole family to enjoy,” he said. Edie Heine, environmental coordinator for the University of Alabama Arboretum, said Saturday will be a great opportunity for the community because of its focus on places, like the arboretum, that are often overshadowed by other distractions, such as video games. The arboretum includes 60 acres of walking trails, native woodland spaces, a wildflower garden, ornamental plants, experimental gardens and children’s gardens. During Family Fun Day, the arboretum will feature artist Linda Munoz, founder of the Black Belt Art Guild. Children can participate hands-on with Munoz and help her design art. There will also be a scavenger hunt and a new exhibit of birds…

In celebration of its 10th anniversary, The Higher Education Partnership published a cookbook…The celebration publication titled ‘The Scholarly Gourmet: A Collection of Recipes from Alabama’s Public Universities’ is much more than a cookbook though it has 250 recipes contributed by people from all 13 of Alabama’s universities…Novelist and University of Alabama alumnus Winston Groom relates his adventures learning to cook for self- preservation and finally to enter a cooking contest in New Orleans with his Alabama Shrimp Creole only to be beaten out by professional chefs. Jim Nabors, UA alumnus as well as actor and singer, contributes Gomer’s Banana Bread Pyle that uses macadamia nuts. Nabors lives in Hawaii and owns a macadamia farm in Maui, where he must gather the ingredients for his recipe…A special section of the cookbook features recipes of the presidents of all the universities, including Robert Witt, president of the University of Alabama, who contributed his Crimson Tide Salsa recipe…
