SGA, University make game day recycling easy
Crimson White – Sept. 5
…A recycling tent will be set up east of Amelia Gayle Gorgas Library as a headquarters for the day’s recycling activities. People who bring several recyclables to the tent will be entered in a raffle to win prizes at the end of the day. Beyond the main tent, blue recycling bags will be set up across the Quad so people don’t have to go far to dump a soda bottle in a recycling bag instead of a trash can. Staff from the Logistics and Support Services department and volunteers from the SGA will transport these bags to the bins located in the main recycling tent…the biggest addition will be the massive recycling presence inside Bryant-Denny Stadium. One hundred 96-gallon bins will be located around the stadium — one at every portal into the football field…The SGA played a critical role in helping cement the University’s focus on game day recycling. “We’ve been involved since June, meeting with the athletic department,” said Justin Trott, SGA director of environmental concerns. “Last year, we were sorting through trash on game days, so it was kind of primitive.”…

Professors try to take nerdiness out of computer science
Pittsburgh (Pa.) Post-Gazette – Sept. 5
Some of the most successful overhauls are shared with other schools, with the goal of increasing the number of students likely to pass these courses and — just as important — retain what is being taught. One example, at the University of Alabama, involved replacing standard lectures with required time in math labs, where students at computers tackle problems at their own pace and get help on the spot from instructors and tutors. The school in four years managed to raise from 40 percent to almost 75 percent the share of students in intermediate algebra earning a C- or better, a significant gain in what was the school’s biggest problem area in math, said Joe Benson, interim vice president for research. The achievement gap between black and white students was erased in the course, and the gains did not require hiring additional faculty. In fact, the cost per student declined by 28 percent…

Embrace the Tulane family
Crimson White – Sept. 5
…As the football team prepares to welcome the Tulane Green Wave to campus for the first home game, I would ask for all UA students and fans to embrace the Tulane family.
For the second time in three years, Tulane students and fans find themselves displaced as a result of a hurricane. As Tide fans, we should always practice sportsmanship toward the opposing team, and during these circumstances I hope we can all give the Tulane players and fans the respect they deserve while they are going through this difficult time. So throughout the game on Saturday, let’s all be courteous and show them our support.
