UA Journalism Student Awarded Knight Fellowship

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Benita Newton, a senior journalism student at The University of Alabama, was recently awarded a fellowship to attend a seminar at the Knight Center for Specialized Journalism at the University of Maryland.

Newton will attend the Knight Center seminar “The ABC’s of Business: Basics of Smart Reporting” Feb. 18-23.

Newton, a native of Deatsville and a reporter for The Tuscaloosa News, is the first student from UA chosen for this fellowship. She has interned at The Birmingham News and The Tuscaloosa News.

Newton is a member of Blue Key and has been named an Ayers Scholar and a McNair Scholar. Last year, she placed third in the Hearst Awards program for in-depth reporting. After graduation, Newton plans to continue at The Tuscaloosa News and attend graduate school.

The seminar will cover questions and concerns of business reporters and editors. The fellows will be encouraged to trade story ideas and will be introduced to valuable news sources. Numerous speakers are set to speak at the seminar, including the two-time Pulitzer Prize winning team of Jim Steele and Don Barlett, currently at Time Inc.
