University of Alabama trustees committee takes next step in plans for new nursing building
Birmingham News – June 20

A committee of University of Alabama System trustees gave approval Thursday to the next step in building a new home for the UA Capstone College of Nursing. The board’s Physical Properties Committee authorized UA to negotiate with three firms seeking to oversee the design, installation and staff training for the 63,000-square-foot building to be built in the 600 block of University Boulevard, across from DCH Medical Center. The three-story red brick building will on its exterior reflect the Greek Revival style of architecture that the campus is known for, but inside it will make room for state-of-the art clinical instruction, using patient simulators and other virtual reality technology…

Nursing building will be UA’s new gateway

The new building for nursing students at the University of Alabama will extend the campus to McFarland Boulevard, making an impressive statement in a highly visible location. At least that’s what UA trustees intend. The three-story, 63,000-square-foot home to the Capstone College of Nursing will be constructed in Greek Revival style at the northeast corner of McFarland and University Boulevard, across from DCH Regional Medical Center. A committee of UA trustees approved the look for the $20 million building on Thursday. ‘The intent was to make this a gateway building, announcing the entrance to campus,’ said Mike Lanier, a vice president with Hoar Construction, the company that oversees UA building projects. ‘This is a most attractive building,’ said Peter Lowe, a trustee from Huntsville….

GPAs for Fraternities and Sororities Rise

…At the University of Alabama a vast majority of fraternities and sororities improved their academic standing last spring. The director of Greek affairs says…many have shown a steady rise in overall GPA since 2003.

Honing their abilities

…“There is a huge variation of talent and that’s a challenge for us as instructors,” said Brent Hardin, director of UA Disability Sports and associate head coach of the university’s women’s wheelchair basketball team. “But it’s working out OK because the new [campers] are jumping in and learning and [the more experienced players] are doing really well in teaching them.” The camp has 60 boys and girls from the United States, Canada and France…Miles Thompson, head coach of the men’s team at UA, said the camp focuses on fine-tuning each player’s fundamental ability…UA’s Disability Sports program has enjoyed success recently. Last season ended with the women’s squad grabbing second place in the finals of the Women’s National Wheelchair Basketball Tournament.
