UAPD receives re-accreditation, honor

The University of Alabama Police Department has been re-accredited for the third time, this time with something extra… UAPD was named a “Flagship Agency,” a distinction the commission describes as an award to “acknowledge the achievement and expertise of some of the most successful CALEA-accredited agencies” and allow them to be “flagship examples to assist other agencies.”…UAPD is one of only seven university law enforcement agencies to receive Flagship…

SGA earns recycling bin grant

As part of a grant by the Coca-Cola Company and the National Recycling Coalition, the SGA will receive 50 recycling bins and place them in residence halls on campus…The SGA is one of 75 grant recipients – out of more than 1,100 applicants – of the NRC and Coca-Cola’s Spring 2008 Recycling Bin Grant program…

Gas nears $4 in Tuscaloosa

…The best hopes for curbing high prices, according to Peter Clark, University of Alabama assistant professor of chemical and biological engineering, is to carpool, double up on trips and cut back on driving overall…Clark said the high prices may be unjustified; negotiations are under way worldwide to increase oil production and Saudi Arabian officials supposedly upped that country’s oil production, but it could still take a month to six weeks for that oil to make it to the market and lower prices. “We’re looking at an entire summer of high prices,” he said.

Sykora receives another honor

Joseph Sykora of Daphne just completed his collegiate career at the University of Alabama, but his academic accolades continue. Sykora was named this week to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America team for the third straight year. He was selected in the at-large division, which encompasses athletes in 11 sports, including golf.

UA hosts Alabama governor’s conference on obesity June 12-13

This year’s conference will focus on practical solutions that professionals involved in the prevention, assessment and treatment of obesity can bring back to their communities, schools and workplaces,” said Dr. Rebecca Kelly, UA director of health promotion and wellness and conference chair…Dr. Donald E.
