UA students hold memorial for VT victims

Students gathered on the Quad Wednesday for the first anniversary of the shootings at Virginia Tech last April…Thirty-two UA students, representing the 32 students killed at Virginia Tech, laid on the ground beside Denny Chimes for three minutes in silence…The purpose of the lie-in was to raise awareness for lax gun laws, Harb said…Sister Madeleine Gregg, an education professor, said they were protesting the lax gun laws that allow people who are mentally ill to have guns. “These kids aren’t protesting gun ownership. There should be a certain degree of responsibility to have a gun,” Gregg said…

Professor receives French honor

…Metka Zupancic, an associate professor of French and modern languages, was inducted as a knight in France’s Ordre des Palmes Académiques, or Order of Academic Palms…The Ordre des Palmes Académiques is an international honor given to those who have made substantial contributions to French culture. The French Consulate in Atlanta nominated Zupancic and UA French and linguistics professor Michael Picone provided a letter of support and other material…

Supreme Court ruling on Kentucky executions felt in Alabama

…Talitha Powers Bailey, the director of the Capital Defense Clinic at the University Of Alabama School Of Law, which assists attorneys in death penalty cases, said the high court’s ruling wasn’t “clear cut” and left open the option of investigating other modes of execution. “It’s an invitation to future litigation,” she said. “The stakes are entirely too high.”…

Alabama student tickets sell out quickly

University of Alabama students snapped up football tickets for the upcoming season shortly after they went on sale. The tickets sold out within two hours and 20 minutes after becoming available Tuesday, athletic department spokesman Doug Walker said…University spokeswoman Deborah Lane said there had been “significantly fewer” complaints from students who were unable to score tickets than last year, Nick Saban’s first as head coach. “This is not a new situation for us,” Lane said Wednesday. “Our ticket demand has been very high for years and years.” She said the university has also established an online pool where students can buy and sell tickets for specific games.
