…University of Alabama Dr. Julia Cherry says all the living organisms in the food chain along the coast are in danger. That includes their habitats, since the sediments, soils and beaches would be contaminated. “Depending on the consistency and the type of oil, the effects can be more or less severe, so with tar and more viscous materials, the effect of coating on the organisms can be more severe and I think that’s the concern with tar substances you’re hearing a lot about,” explains Dr. Cherry. She adds that it’s too early to tell if the contamination could cause the extinction of organisms, but it is possible…CBS 42 caught up with a petroleum engineer today at the University of Alabama. Dr. Philip Johnson says one of the solutions is to put in three capture devices to collect the oil…”It appears to me they might be able to capture some of the oil to keep it from getting to the shore but the long term solution has to be to shut it in and this is the only method I’m aware of that’s going to work at this point,” explains Dr. Johnson.
