PRWeek Magazine recently ranked the public relations program at the University second in the nation and first in undergraduate programs…The department ranks second only to New York University, which only offers a graduate level public relations program. The other finalists included Georgetown University, Brigham Young University, and Howard University. “This latest ranking confirms what our students, industry friends and academic colleagues around the country already know: that our undergraduate PR program is one of the elite programs in the nation,” said Loy Singleton, dean of the College of Communication and Information Sciences, in a statement…
McNair Scholars offers research opportunities for students

The McNair Scholars Program held its annual convocation Thursday night in Smith Hall to honor previous members and induct the 2010 McNair Scholars. The McNair Program is designed for undergraduate students who have an interest in pursuing doctoral degrees. McNair Scholars work with faculty mentors through the graduate program to research specific fields, and they publish their findings at the end of their year-long study. “[The annual convocation] originated during the early years of McNair at UA as a reception at which the latest volume of the University of Alabama McNair Journal was presented,” said Nancy Campbell, director of the McNair Program. “A new volume is published each April which features research articles by McNair Scholars who have conducted original research under the guidance of a University faculty member in the previous year.” The program aids first-generation college students in financial need and underrepresented minority groups to help them “get their foot in the door,” said Taylor Monson, a 2009 McNair Scholar who is a senior majoring in psychology…
UA, ACA deliver hope

Three University of Alabama students have formed a new not-for-profit organization, “A Hope for Life,” to try to win the fight against cancer…The students worked with Barton Adcox, a tax attorney with Adcox Associates, to establish 501(c)3 status for their organization. Adcox said he was impressed by the students’ commitment. “It’s very impressive to see young people really care about our community,” he said. “You always hear about college students and some of the crazy things they do, and these guys are college students who are showing their best face and trying to do something good for the community.” The organization teamed up Thursday with a class at American Christian Academy to make Easter baskets to be delivered to children with cancer at Children’s Hospital in Birmingham. Estes, Lawson and Argota provided all the materials but wanted students to help give the baskets a personal touch…
Hopefuls bash AG King at UA forum

The man who wasn’t there — Attorney General Troy King — was the target of some harsh bipartisan criticism from three of the men who want his job during a forum on the University of Alabama campus Thursday. The forum was part of the UA Honors College Lecture Series and brought to Sellers Auditorium three of the five candidates for attorney general in the Nov. 2 general election. Montgomery attorney Michel Nicrosi, a Democrat, and King did not attend the forum…Organizers of the forum, which was co-sponsored by the UA School of Law and the Blackburn Institute, said that King had declined their invitation to participate in the forum, citing his duties in office. Nicrosi said she could not attend because of a scheduling conflict…

…Rickman, who gave a screenwriting advice to crowd at Gorgas Library on Wednesday night, will continue his visit to the University with a film forum today at 7 p.m. in Room 360 of the Ferguson Center. Billy Field, a filmmaking professor in the Honors College, said the event will give students an opportunity to ask questions and get advice about the filmmaking process. “The purpose of the film forum is an opportunity for students to look at their films, to look through their films like a prism with Tom to talk about what kind of films students want to make, to discuss all kinds of things to do with filmmaking,” Field said. “It’s a chance to acknowledge students’ work and talk about it.” Field added that student films would not be the only things up for discussion. “One of the things that could be up for discussion is if students want to have a campus-wide film festival here, this would be a good time for students to talk about that,” Field said…
Silent Art Auction Kicks Off Fundraising for Crimson Build

Fundraising for the Crimson Build is underway as dozens gathered at the silent art auction put on by a marketing class from the University and Habitat for Humanity. The auction, which raised about $2,000, was the beginning of raising money toward the $65,000 it will take to build the Habitat for Humanity house…
Big demand and low supply expected for iPad’s debut

…the Apple store within the Ferguson Center location of the University of Alabama Supply Store will have iPads in stock Monday, a Supply store employee said Thursday. Managers for the store could not comment on the iPad before their Monday launch and it’s unclear how many iPads the store will receive.
