UA team places second in international competition

…That’s the challenge a team of four MBA students from the University of Alabama’s Manderson Graduate School of Business faced last month in an international competition at the University of Colorado. It’s a competition in which the UA team scored. The four-member team won second place, beating teams from Harvard, Yale and other Ivy League schools, and it narrowly missed the top spot, said Louis Marino, a UA professor of management and marketing who selected the team….

Students give Holt a face-lift

This morning, students from Holt High School and the University of Alabama will clean up and renovate Rochelle Park. The students are cleaning the park as part of their mission to revitalize the Holt community through the Holt Community Partnership, a group of Holt residents, high school students, UA students and employees, law enforcement, and community agencies. “My psychology course at the university partnered with the high school kids at Holt to try and get the youth in that community involved in their community,” said Jeffrey Parker, an associate professor at the UA department of psychology. “One of the projects the (students) wanted to do is take back their local park,” he said. “To do that, we got local businesses, churches and a bunch of students to go out to repaint the park as well as other things.”…

Sleep Habits Revealed in New Survey

…“There’s enough research out there to suggest there may be ethnic differences in sleep disorders, such as insomnia and sleep apnea, differences in the amount and quality of sleep, and the health consequences of sleep disorders,” said study researcher Kenneth Lichstein, director of the Sleep Research Project and professor at the University of Alabama… “It surprised me that about 75 percent in all groups believed sleep was related to health and daily functioning,” Lichstein said. “This signals to me a tremendous awareness among healthcare providers and patients about health and sleep.”…“What also stood out to me was how busy people are in the hour before going to sleep. I’ve never seen data like this before. They’re working; they’re watching TV; they’re on their computers; they’re praying; they’re busy with sexual activity,” Lichstein told LiveScience. “That’s usually something sleep specialists would recommend against. That hour before sleep should be a quiet time, a time to wind down.”…

Ceremony ends Capstone Creed Week

The 2010 Capstone Creed Week ended its festivities Friday in Moody Music Hall by honoring faculty and students with the annual Capstone Heroes ceremony…According to a news release, the Capstone Hero Award was created to honor students, faculty, staff and student organizations whose contributions to life at the Capstone reflect the values within the Capstone Creed. Since 2005, nearly 70 individuals and organizations have been honored with this award. The 2010 Capstone Heroes:

20-year-old pastor brings new life to aging church

…She’s a junior at the University of Alabama, carrying a 4.0-plus grade-point average. She’s working toward graduation in December, with a full course load and two side jobs — as a Presbyterian pastor, and as a Spanish tutor and translator for Tuscaloosa County schools…”To look at her, you wouldn’t think you’d hear an interesting sermon,” Ray said. “She’s educated. She knows so much. I’ve learned a lot from her. She comes up with things I never have thought of. When she comes to the end of her sermon, I want to hear more.”…

Jefferson County will vote on a measure Tuesday to raise $26.8 million through the sale of bonds, while it is struggling under $3.2 billion in sewer debt

…Robert Brooks, professor of financial management at the University of Alabama, said the county must figure how to live within its means and not incur more debt. “The easy answer is always borrow more money,” Brooks said. “Just like in family, when things are tight the easy answer is just whipping out the credit card. We all know that’s a long-run-painful way to resolve financial tough times.”…

…Geri Stone, associate director of professional development and conference services in The University of Alabama College of Continuing Studies, recently received the 2009 Wayne Whelan Scholarship from the Association for Continuing Higher Education Inc. The scholarship is given annually to an ACHE member engaged in graduate studies on a full-time or part-time basis.
