Former UA linebacker remembered for selflessness, cheer

In his last in-depth conversation before his death, former University of Alabama linebacker Victor Ellis had a message for Crimson Tide fans and other well-wishers.
“He wanted people to `Smile and go on,'” said Ahmaad Galloway, Ellis’ teammate and best friend. Galloway, a UA running back from 1999 to 2002, spent time with Ellis at a Chattanooga hospital before Ellis died Tuesday night from a rare form of cancer called medullary renal cell carcinoma…

Engineering students design bikes for people with disabilities

Alan Hewitt may have looked a little out of place, but that didn’t stop him from taking a tandem bike for a spin with a fellow University of Alabama student…The bike ride around campus was not just a break from class; it was the class. Hewitt was one of many senior mechanical engineering students helping AMBUCS, the national service organization formerly known as American Business Clubs, by creating side-by-side tandem bikes top allow people with disabilities to ride along with a companion.

Engineering students help communities in need

…Hamilton, a senior majoring in electrical engineering, and the other students with him that day are all part of the UA chapter of Engineers Without Borders, a student organization that partners with disadvantaged communities around the world to design and implement engineering projects that improve the quality of life in those communities. Along with the help they provided after the tornado hit Greensboro late last year, the group has also had the opportunity to help other communities in Hale County. In one project, the group helped improve residential plumbing in the county…

Native plants to be discussed

William Cullina, director of horticulture for the New England Wildflower Society and author of several books on native plants, trees, and shrubs and grasses, will present “Native Plants for Southeastern Gardens,” at 6:30 p.m. today in Room 205 of Smith Hall at the University of Alabama. The lecture is in memory of longtime UA forester George Wood Jr. and is part of the Arboretum’s 2007-08 50th anniversary.
