UA Students Compete in Miss Alabama Pageant

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Twelve University of Alabama students are among the contestants in this year’s Miss Alabama pageant being held at Samford University June 13-16.

UA students in the competition include:

Amy Elizabeth Calhoun, Miss University of Alabama, a senior majoring in telecommunications and film and minoring in political science. She is the daughter of Gregory and Brenda Calhoun of Vestavia Hills. Her platform concerns the education of college-aged women on the facts of breast cancer prevention. For the talent competition, she will perform a classical flute piece.

Miss Alabama Gulf Coast, Selena Averett of Cottondale, promotes arts education through her platform, “The Importance of the Arts.” She is a freshman studying broadcast journalism. She will perform a vocal interpretation of “You Don’t Know Me.”

Brooke Boswell of Northport, Miss Jefferson County, is a freshman majoring in public relations. The platform she chose is “Framing Our Future through Project Pair-Up.” She will perform a ballet on pointe to “The Giving.”

Libbi Langford of Lanett will represent Miss Chattahoochee Valley in the Miss Alabama pageant. Langford is a junior majoring in music therapy with a principle in voice. She chose “Literacy: Building a Foundation for Life” as her platform. She will sing “A Time to Say Goodbye” for her talent.

Lauren Davis, Miss Glencoe Area, is a junior majoring in telecommunication and film. She is the daughter of Jeffrey and Virginia Davis of Rainbow City. Her platform is “Success by Six: Children’s Needs.” She will sing “I Enjoy Being a Girl” during the talent competition.

Miss Tuscaloosa, Katy Ott of Winfield, is a senior majoring in advertising and minoring in marketing. She selected “Alliance for Youth” as her platform. During the talent competition she will sing “Hurt Me.”

Ashley Deese of Tuscaloosa, Miss Tombigbee, is a freshman majoring in secondary education. Deese’s platform is “Sexual Abstinence and Teen Pregnancy Prevention.” She will compete in talent by singing “And I’m Telling You.”

Shannon Camper of Glencoe, a senior studying broadcast journalism, will represent the Miss Point Mallard preliminary. In January, Camper’s platform, “Breast Cancer Awareness,” earned her recognition as being the youngest spokesperson for Alabama’s Susan G. Komen Foundation. She will perform “Stormy Weather” during the talent competition.

Catherine Loftin of Enterprise, Miss Magic City, is a senior studying broadcast news. She wanted “Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow: The American Red Cross” as her platform. For the talent competition, she will sing “Someone Like You.”

Miss Lake Martin, Bari Watson of Hueytown, graduated from the University as an advertising and public relations student. Watson promotes the social inclusion of mentally and physically challenged adults and children through her platform, “Project Friendship.” She will perform “Sonata in E Minor, Opus 1” on the piano.

Kelly Jones of Birmingham (35242), Miss Homewood Area, is a graduate student studying music education. For her platform, she chose “Boys and Girls Clubs: Be a Peer Role Model.” She will play “First Ballad in G Minor” on the piano during the talent competition.

Brooke Stone of Sumiton, Miss Walker County, is a junior majoring in vocal performance. She chose “Inspiring Children through Music” as her platform. Stone will perform a vocal selection “La Canzone d’Doretta” for the talent portion of her competition.

The winner of the Miss Alabama pageant will represent the state at the Miss America pageant in September in Atlantic City, N.J.
