TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama Scholastic Press Association will host “The Long Weekend,” a three-day journalism camp at The University of Alabama, July 20-22.
All interested high school students and teachers are encouraged to participate in the Friday though Sunday camp, which is an intensive workshop designed to teach creative and efficient ways to communicate through high school newspapers, yearbooks, literary magazines and broadcast.
The Long Weekend also gives students a chance to experience college life, including residing in dorms with roommates, eating in University commons, and more. Students may choose one of the following tracks: newspaper, desktop publishing/technology, photography, yearbook, literary magazine and broadcast.
Advisers may participate in one of these tracks along with their students, or they may choose the adviser track. By doing so, teachers may receive continuing education credits.
University faculty and area media professionals will serve as workshop instructors, and will be joined by nationally known journalism educators. David Knight of Lancaster, S.C., will conduct the newspaper/news magazine track. Lori Oglesbee of McKinney, Texas, and Margaret Sorrows of Alexander, Ark., will direct the yearbook track. Beth Fitts of Oxford, Miss., and John Cutsinger of Apopka, Fla., will teach literary magazine sessions.
The workshop fee of $150 for Alabama Scholastic Press Association members and $175 for non-members includes all room and board expenses. Advisers who bring 10 or more students and assist with dorm supervision will receive a $70 tuition waiver.
