Bryant remains a boon to business

…Even though a specific monetary figure is unlikely to be forthcoming, Barry Mason, dean of UA’s Culverhouse College of Commerce and Business Administration, said Bryant’s contribution cannot be underestimated. ‘It’s clear that he laid the foundation for the kind of economic engine that now exists for all the current football games, Mason said. ‘He won the national championships, he built the expectation that we would win every year and inspired a huge passion for football that continues on.’…A recent study by UA’s Center for Business and Economic Research estimated that the university, its employees, students and campus visitors generated $1.2 billion in the Tuscaloosa metro area in the 2006-2007 academic year…The licensing fees accompanying those products displaying UA trademarks have also proven a windfall for the university. According to Cathy Andreen, spokeswoman for UA, the trademark licensing program has generated more than $25 million in royalty income since its inception in 1981…Andreen said the Bryant family has not received compensation for the use of Bryant’s image since the coach’s death…
