TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – A group of student volunteers from The University of Alabama will be participating in a service project organized by the UA Community Service Center to help residents of rural Greensboro Jan. 16-18.
The students will work on service projects with the Hale County Chapter of Habitat for Humanity, including landscaping and floor work on houses in the area.
They will also continue their service on Sunday, Jan. 17, by visiting the Pie Lab, a pie shop that also operates as a community design center focusing on community development projects and small business incubation in Greensboro and the surrounding five counties. The Pie Lab is an initiative of Project M, and it also partners with Youth Build to provide job training for local youth. (The Pie Lab is located at 1317 Main St., Greensboro, Ala. 36744.)
On the morning of Monday, Jan. 18, the students will visit the Safe House Black History Museum. The museum occupies a house used to conceal Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during his organization of peaceful resistance protests of segregation in Alabama during the 1960s. The museum was founded in 2002 by Theresa Burroughs, a civil rights foot soldier who worked with King. (The Safe House Museum is located at Davis Street and Martin Luther King Drive, Greensboro, Ala. 36744.)
