UA Art Exhibit Interprets Fairy Tales with Contemporary Art Works

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama and the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art welcome the exhibition “Pixerina Witcherina,” which is a collection of artwork addressing the notion of fairy tales and the world of fantasy.

Bill Conger of the University Galleries at Illinois State University curates the exhibition. Conger has assembled the work of 13 women who investigate the theme of fairy tales and fantasy in a variety of media. The opening reception for the exhibit is Friday, Sept. 20 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. “Pixerina Witcherina” will run from Sept. 20 until Oct. 20.

“Contemporary art is a mirroring product,” said William Dooley, director of the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art and art department chairman. “These artists pursue visual responses using a formalized language of painting, sculpture or photography to accompany a patron’s own personal memories or experiences with the fairy tale or its characters.”

The name of the exhibit “pixerina witcherina” comes from an invented language used by author Virginia Woolf and her niece for secret conversations. The exhibit takes the name to suggest the ties of both the youth-culture of future goddesses and about the shared culture of women, young and old.

The department of art and the College of Arts & Sciences at The University of Alabama provide funding support for the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art. Additional funding for this exhibition is provided by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.

The Sarah Moody Gallery of Art’s operating hours are Monday – Friday 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
