Media Advisory — State Superintendent to Visit UA Campus Oct. 7 to Discuss New Superintendent Academy

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Dr. Ed Richardson, superintendent for the Alabama Board of Education, will be on The University of Alabama campus Monday, Oct. 7 to meet with UA administrators, including UA interim President Barry Mason, about the new UA Superintendents Academy (UASA).

A media opportunity is planned for 1:30 p.m. in the UA President’s Conference Room, 203 Rose Administration Building. In addition to Richardson and Mason, those scheduled to be present will be Dr. Nancy Barrett, UA provost and vice-president for academic affairs; Dr. John Dolly, dean of the UA College of Education; Dr. John Freeman, UA faculty member and UASA director; Sandra Ray, member of the Alabama State Board of Education and chair of the College of Education’s Board of Advisors.

The UASA concept was initiated by the State Department of Education to assist the department in attracting and training a larger and wider pool of candidates for superintendent positions around the state. UA’s College of Education received a grant from the Department to develop and staff the academy.

In addition, UASA will offer professional development to sitting superintendents. Internet links will allow all superintendents to communicate with other superintendents and the University to seek suggestions, answers, or support for day-to-day problems. Also, six weekend institutes are planned where participants will receive instruction from leaders and experts in the field, as well as intensive problem-based learning experiences in which these participants will address a variety of problems and seek solutions that will benefit their schools.
