TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama Psi Chapter of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity recently won the Lion Trophy for its commitment to scholarship, community service, chapter improvement and alumni relations. The Lion Trophy is an international award given to the outstanding DKE chapter.
The Lion Trophy was presented to the UA Psi Chapter at the DKE International Convention in Jacksonville, Fla., in August. During the recent UA homecoming weekend, the DKE international director came to Tuscaloosa to make an official presentation of the trophy.
Some of the outstanding achievements of the UA Psi Chapter of DKE include a big brother-little brother scholarship competition that encourages scholastic achievement, and the re-instatement of the annual homecoming alumni chapter meeting, which has led to greater involvement of DKE alumni. Members of the DKE fraternity also work closely with the Hannah Home for Abused and Battered Children. Their biggest projects with Hannah Home include the annual Halloween and Christmas parties they host for the children.
“The last time we won the Lion Trophy was in 1997 and before that we won it in 1979,” said Dick Marshall, DKE senior. “It is a tremendous honor.”
The Lion Trophy is a silver cup that was presented to William Boyd Jacobs, the last surviving founder of the DKE fraternity, in 1894 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the fraternity’s founding.
The winners of the Lion Trophy are selected by four alumni judges from diverse regions that have no attachment to any of the applicants.
