UA, UT come together to aid homeless in Pasadena

As a line began to form in front of the Union Station Homeless Services Adult Center in Pasadena early Wednesday morning, student leaders from the University of Alabama and the University of Texas were inside setting tables with plates, spoons, cups, syrup and muffins, and in the kitchen flipping pancakes and stirring oatmeal…The UA Student Government Association initiated the service project and UT student leaders joined in. After preparing and serving breakfast, the groups stayed to help with the lunch service…Lowell Davis, UA assistant dean of students, said that when SGA President Steven Oliver approached him about the service project, he was eager to help the SGA see it through. “The purpose is to see two universities come together the day before the BCS National Championship and say we’re committed to serving people,” Davis said. “Our goal is to teach and train students to return to the community, to be productive citizens and make a difference.”…

…Fowler had no issues seeing the Tide win their 13th championship at the Ferguson Center Theatre. He was one of hundreds watching the game in the theatre and at other venues on campus. The Ferguson Center also showed the game on a projection screen in the dining space between the food court and Starbucks, where dozens of fans watched at the tables, and free popcorn was available…Sawyer and Robinson were among more than a dozen students watching the game at the Riverside Community Center…

Opinion: New IRS rules finish work of UA students

…The “sting” drew the attention of the Internal Revenue Service, which is moving to implement changes based on the UA students’ sleuthing — not just in Alabama, but across the country…The work done by the UA ethics center is also drawing national attention, including an article in BusinessWeek that gave a tip of the hat to the center and its dedicated students. Black said the new IRS regulations, which will be put into effect next tax season, are actually stronger than what was included in the ill-fated bill before the Alabama Legislature and in some ways resembles strict laws in Oregon that the UA students used as their own model…
