Center puts focus on prevention: UA researchers study, attempt to reduce children’s behavioral issues

…A new center at UA focuses on studying and reducing childhood behavioral problems. The Center for the Prevention of Youth Behavior Problems celebrated its opening Monday. ‘This has been a real effort over the last 10 years, to develop a center to stimulate research and look at aggressive, antisocial and substance abuse behavior in children,’ Lochman said at the center’s open house…In addition to working with area children, the center also serves as a collaborative research effort at UA, added Joe Benson, vice president of research at UA. Researchers from various areas of study can join their research efforts in behavioral issues through the center. ‘We are focusing more attention on collaboration,’ he said. ‘The center is one way to bring people together and share expertise.’

Stone knappers come to Moundville

…The early-arriving Beach is one of the many stone tool makers and primitive artists who will be at the prehistoric Native American site for the park’s ninth annual Knap-in and Primitive Arts Meet on Friday and Saturday. Artists and craftsmen will demonstrate their ancient technologies at the meet and how the tools and weapons they make are used.
In addition to knapping, demonstrations will include the use of primitive fishing equipment, bow and arrow shooting and the use of the atlati, a spear-throwing device employed before bows were invented…There will also be a raffle and silent auction Saturday for some of the pieces donated by the artists and craftsmen, with the proceeds to go to support of the park, which is part of the University of Alabama…
