Pests, diseases wreaking havoc

…Life extension for fall flowering shrubs, plants and containers: David Francko (University of Alabama botanist) and his team have developed a spray that offers up to six weeks of protection for plants exposed to temperatures as low as 9.4 degrees F. Known as FreezePruf, the eco-safe, water-based spray from The Liquid Fence Company contains ingredients that work to lower the freezing point of plant tissues, strengthen cell walls and membranes, and coat leaves to reduce water loss, retaining active ingredients within plant tissues. “… Plants can be frozen solid and still be viable,” said Francko. The spray can be applied in advance or just before a projected freeze, and can be used on plants and crops, keeping both fall veggies and flowering containers producing weeks beyond those hard frosts that typically spell season’s end… 

Students direct Capstone Chamber Orchestra

…the Capstone Chamber Orchestra performs Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Frank Moody Music Building. The Capstone Chamber Orchestra is comprised of students and community members. Two UA undergraduate students, Caleb Young and Norman Huynh, put the orchestra together…

Students write letters for a cause

UA students, faculty and staff will get a chance to make their contribution to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital today from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. People are invited to come to the Ferguson Center east dining room and participate in St. Jude’s annual letter writing campaign, “Up ’til Dawn.” Participants need to bring addresses of friends, family or acquaintances they think would be interested in donating to the cause…

SGA hosts events to raise money for RAGE

From today until early Saturday morning, the SGA will host a number of events for students to enjoy to raise money for the RAGE Scholarships available for students. The RAGE scholarships range from $500 to $1500, and students can apply for a need-based scholarship, a merit-based scholarship or both…For example, students can see Tim Reynolds, a musician who played with Dave Matthews on the albums “Live at Radio City” and “Live at Luther College,” at the Bama Theatre on Wednesday from 8:30 p.m. until 11:30 p.m…
