The Buford Peace Award is a prestigious universitywide honor presented annually by the School of Social Work during its award ceremony at the end of each academic year. This honor is bestowed on a faculty member who demonstrates exceptional levels of involvement in mediating human disputes, helping overcome prejudice, promoting justice and establishing peace through their teaching, research, professional practice and personal life.

Cheatham exemplifies the spirit of this prestigious award through her work with youth transitioning out of foster care, individuals with disabilities and justice-involved populations.

Cheatham’s experience as a social worker and attorney brings a uniquely interdisciplinary perspective to addressing complex social issues. Her research focuses on dismantling barriers and improving outcomes for vulnerable populations, particularly youth with disabilities transitioning from foster care. Through federally and state-funded research projects, peer-reviewed scholarship and community partnerships, her work has informed policy, improved access to healthcare and support services, and elevated the voices of individuals. Cheatham has also collaborated extensively with community organizations, child welfare agencies and correctional institutions across Alabama and beyond.

In the classroom, Cheatham is recognized for fostering learning environments that encourage critical dialogue, ethical practice and advocacy for human rights. She mentors graduate students across the School of Social Work, helping prepare future scholars and practitioners to engage in research, policy and practice that advance their communities.

Since joining The University of Alabama faculty in 2016, Cheatham has served in numerous leadership and service roles within the University and profession, including as co-editor-in-chief of Child and Adolescent Social Work Journal. Her dedication to scholarship, mentorship and community-engaged practice reflects the values of mediation, advocacy and peace that define the Buford Peace Award.
