Games, activities emphasize importance of writing
Tuscaloosa News – Oct. 21
…The salt-shaker word game was one many reading and writing activities available Tuesday evening at Northington Elementary School for Family Writing Night. About 25 parents and 50 Northington students attended the event, which was hosted by the Alabama Consortium for Educational Renewal, faculty members and students at the University of Alabama’s College of Education…The Alabama Consortium for Educational Renewal is a partnership program between the University of Alabama College of Education, the Tuscaloosa city school system, and the Tuscaloosa county school system. Hughes said the consortium works with faculty and administration members at six county and city schools and faculty at the University of Alabama to provide educational activities and programs. About 30 University of Alabama College of Education students volunteered at the event. The UA students devised learning games and gave the elementary students instructions on how to play them at each station… 

UA earns B- on green report card

…The University earned a B- on its 2010 Green Report Card from the Sustainable Endowments Institute. The institute, a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing environmental issues on college campuses, evaluated more than 300 schools in categories such as transportation, recycling and student involvement. This is the second year Alabama’s Green Report Card has improved, from a D in 2007 to the current B-. “We had input from a lot of people on campus,” said energy manager Robert Martin. “It’s a campus-wide effort to raise our score. It shows that we’re making an effort to do the right thing.”…

Lecture shows students how to lead

The “Habitudes Experience,” a presentation of several principles on leadership…by Tim Elmore…“Habitudes” is a four-book series published by Growing Leaders, a non-profit organization that teaches leadership skills around the world. Each of the four books focuses on a different level of leadership. The first book concentrates on self-leadership while the following three books focus on relationships with others, leading others and changing culture, respectively.

As Genocide Continues to Shape World History, Landmark Conference will Seek Answers and Understanding

Alabama housing market shows signs of recovery

…The Alabama Center for Real Estate, a research and service component of the Culverhouse College of Commerce, has released its annual housing report. The report shows that on the Alabama housing market up to August 2009 and analyzes housing sales and new construction rates throughout the state…Grayson Glaze, executive director of ACRE, predicted that the housing market would improve even more in 2010. “It will be gradual due to an anticipated slow growing economy, highlighted by historically high unemployment rates and below normal levels of consumer confidence,” Glaze said in an e-mail…

Popular Halloween Costumes & Last-Minute Bargains

One expert says last-minute Halloween shoppers may find some good bargains. “Stores around Tuscaloosa have said that they have seen pretty good business for Halloween, which is good, and that they (retailers) think a lot of people will buy a lot during the week of Halloween, so we may have more to expect then,” said Dr. Kristy Reynolds, a marketing professor at the University of Alabama. Reynolds also says stores haven’t ordered as much Halloween stuff this year because of the economy and having leftover inventory from last year.

Higher Education Center to hold open house

The University of West Alabama invites the community to an open house at the Demopolis Higher Education Center on Thursday, Nov. 12, from 6 to 8 p.m.…The Demopolis Higher Education Center offers a wide array of academic and continuing education courses…The Demopolis Higher Education Center, constructed in 2004 with federal funds, is a partnership among UWA, Auburn University, the University of Alabama and Alabama Southern Community College.
