A team of Culverhouse College of Business faculty and staff members gathered on May 16 for the Selma Ripple Trip, part of the Selma Resilience Initiative, or SRI. SRI is a community-driven service-learning initiative that brings UA students and Selma stakeholders together to create lasting change in the city by actively engaging in hands-on projects.
The group focused on beautification in a portion of downtown, tending to flower boxes built last fall on a separate trip. The group also planted trees along Water Avenue and cleaned up parts of Civil Rights Memorial Park at the southern end of the Edmund Pettus Bridge. They also checked out local businesses and met with area representatives at a community reception.
Another faculty/staff trip to Selma is scheduled for July 18. After lunch there will be an opportunity to see the sights of downtown Selma, along with an opportunity to visit Selma Roots — a family store made possible by a collaboration between Culverhouse and the College of Human Environmental Sciences. To close out the day, there will be a community reception with local leaders and movers and shakers.
