Each of us plays a unique part, but together we create something greater. …When we come together to give, we help build a brighter future for everyone.
Dr. Hyunjin Noh is the doctoral program director and an associate professor in the School of Social Work. She has been a professor at The University of Alabama for 13 years, and in that time, the most rewarding part of her work has been seeing the impact of the University’s community partnerships in outreach, education and service.

“As former international graduate students, my husband and I benefited from fellowships and scholarships. And that experience really inspired us to give back,” Noh said. “So, we established two endowed scholarships, one for the Social Work International Practicum Program, and the other for social doctoral student support.”
The Noh and Lee Endowed Scholarship, which is awarded to a student participating in the International Field Placement, was established by Noh and her husband, Changjae Lee. They also established Hyunjin Noh and Changjae Lee Endowed Social Work PhD Student Support Fund to assist in meeting social work doctoral students’ financial needs.
Of her work, Noh said, “Social work empowers individuals, families and communities through addressing real world challenges. We train the next generation of practitioners, educators and researchers who are committed to evidence-based services and advocacy.”
As a We Are UA ambassador, Noh is raising additional funds for the Social Work PhD Student Support Fund which offers financial support for doctoral students through scholarships, grants and assistantships.
The UA School of Social Work is ranked in the top 11% of national social work programs and it is ranked 18th among public colleges in the United States. Additionally, it is Alabama’s only standalone social work college offering degrees at all levels, including bachelor’s, master’s, Doctor of Social Work and Doctor of Philosophy.
One of the strategic planning goals in the School of Social Work is to prepare students as global citizens who are committed to evidence-based practice. To accomplish this, they aim to recruit and retain high-quality students by prioritizing an increase in scholarships for graduate students and those in practicum.
“Faculty and staff shape UA’s excellence through their dedication. In my interdisciplinary work and community services, I’ve seen firsthand how every role contributes to innovation and progress; it’s like an orchestra” Noh said, continuing, “Each of us plays a unique part, but together we create something greater.”
