More than 5,000 parents are expected in Tuscaloosa this weekend for the annual University of Alabama family weekend to tour the UA campus, experience college football and reconnect with students. “We wanted to introduce families to the entire campus rather than just one area. We wanted them to get a feel for what students’ day-to-day life is like on campus,” said Sara Hartley, assistant director of parent programs at the University of Alabama. Some scheduled events today include a tour of the President’s Mansion, a seminar on social networking for parents, a bike ride and a riverboat cruise. The first of three cruises sponsored by the Tuscaloosa County University of Alabama alumni chapter will start at 7 tonight with entertainment by UA cheerleaders and the Million Dollar Band…

Experts discuss health-care reform’s fine points

A panel of experts debated the constitutionality of congressional efforts to reform the nation’s health-care system during a forum Thursday on the University of Alabama campus. “While there’s nothing in the Constitution that allows the government to regulate health care, there’s nothing that says they can’t,” said David Lanoue, chairman of UA’s political science department, and moderator of the discussion. The event, held in Lloyd Hall before an audience of students, marked Constitution Day, which honors the Sept. 17, 1787, signing of the U.S. Constitution. UA Law School professors Bryan Fair and Tony Freyer — who is also a history professor — and Joseph Smith, a professor in political science, participated in the hour-long discussion…

Hybrid Vehicle Concept Developed for RV Touring

While the cost of fuel has put a damper on the travel plans of many Americans, one father-son engineering duo with a passion for RV travel has decided to combat the problem by creating a concept for an electric-hybrid passenger vehicle with the ability to improve fuel economy and increase the acceleration of the motor home towing it. Dr. Steve Shepard Jr., UA associate professor of mechanical engineering, and his father, Dr. Steve Shepard Sr., developed the idea for a hybrid dinghy pusher after the cost of fuel curtailed both families’ traveling plans.

…The impact of University spending on the Tuscaloosa metro area in 2007-08 totaled $1.262 billion…Ahmad Ijaz, an economic analyst with the University, said the numbers display the prominent role the student body plays in the economic success of the city as a whole. Based on enrollment numbers for the 2007-08 school year, on average each student contributes approximately $16,500 to the city on a yearly basis — money Ijaz said is spent paying rent, buying groceries and other necessities while away from home…
First weekend of 348-Express a success

…Director of the division of financial affairs for auxiliary services Gina Johnson said working with the SGA to get the program on its feet went well…Johnson said transportation and auxiliary services was in full support of this program. “We are really excited about it,” Johnson said. “348-RIDE has been overwhelmed this semester. We’ve had about seven times as many calls this year as last year.”…This past weekend was the first weekend that 348-RIDE Express was up and fully running. Fowler said almost 500 students used the service on Thursday night, and he expects those numbers to rise as word of the service travels. Approximately 2,200 students in total used 348-RIDE Express this weekend, Fowler said…
