UA in top 50 of U.S. News ranking

U.S. News & World Report’s 2010 public college rankings listed Auburn University and the University of Alabama in the top 50 for public schools. Auburn rose six spots to No. 39 while the University of Alabama fell six positions to No. 43 in the public college rankings. Alabama was 96th and Auburn 88th in the magazine’s ranking of all national universities. Birmingham-Southern College fell to 92nd in the national liberal arts colleges rankings. It ranked 81st in 2009.

Helping Students Make the Transition from Elementary to Middle School

The step from elementary to middle school is a big one. According to educators at the University of Alabama, a misstep can mean the difference between a student who graduates or drops out of high school…University of Alabama associate professor Dr. Natalie Adams says it’s an important time for tweens. “Parents are always anxious about the transition into kindergarten from home and really the transition from elementary to middle school is probably more of a big deal. Not only are your children going through unbelievable social, emotional, physical, changes, but they are also going to face a brand new school with all those challenges like changing classes for the first time, balancing new friends, homework and new rules…

SGA leads recycling efforts

…Tony Johnson, UA director of logistic and support services. The University has also taken the old mattresses out of residence halls and recycled them, he said. “We research other avenues that can be recycled,” Johnson said. “Ninety-five percent of a mattress can be recycled, and [the University] has recycled 650 mattresses.” Johnson said wood is also an easily recycled material the recycling committee uses.“It’s so easy to recycle wood,” Johnson said. “Over 56 tons were recycled in July alone.” Johnson said in the last 12 months, the University has recycled 800 tons of recycled material. He said people outside the University are starting to notice the effort. “Other universities are starting to model this program,” Johnson said…

UA welcomes students

The University held a series of programs on campus this week to give incoming freshmen and transfer students a warm welcome to the campus. The Week of Welcome, also known as WOW, used the motto “One Week, Endless Possibilities” to ensure that first-year and transfer students remained busy with a number of activities as they took their first steps at the Capstone… “I think the Week of Welcome is very informative, people seem really helpful,” said Marissa Carden, a freshman majoring in computer and electrical engineering…

Move-in goes smoothly, vacancies remain

Over 7,000 students moved into a number of dormitories for the fall semester, but there are still some vacancies to be filled. Housing and Residential Communities spokeswoman Alicia Browne said students who are still showing up to move in may account for these vacancies, so the number of unoccupied dorms has not been determined…“We heard a lot of compliments, particularly from parents, during move-in, and we’ve had several follow up e-mails offering positive feedback since,” Browne said…“The move-in was a real campus effort. UAPD and Parking Services did a great job assisting with traffic and crowd control, and there were faculty, staff and student volunteers at many residence halls, helping unload students’ belongings and get them into the rooms…

UA sees biggest summer for construction

Among the construction projects completed before the start of the semester are the long-awaited Ridgecrest South dormitory and the new Science and Engineering Complex, according to the University…Renovations at Lloyd Hall continue on the first and second floors, Leopard said…In other news, construction work on the new Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity house will begin in a few weeks…Work on the new Capstone College of Nursing was also accelerated with concrete framing of the building already complete. Currently, construction crews are erecting steel frames around the building and framing the walls…

Campus ministries welcome students

…”The University has worked very well with the Campus Ministry Association,” Nelms said. The Wesley Foundation and St. Francis are only two of a dozen campus ministries on the UA campus. More information about the campus ministries can be found at the Dean of Students Web site, dos.ua.edu. Smith said the University helps the Campus Ministry Association in the recruiting process by giving the option to list religious preference upon application for admission into the University. If the student chooses, his or her contact information may be given to the ministry matching their beliefs…

Moody Gallery shows art of Dozier Bell

“Navigator: Paintings by Dozier Bell” opened at Moody Gallery on July 31 and will run until September 4. In lieu of an opening ceremony, Bell will hold a lecture on August 26 at 5 p.m. in 205 Gorgas Library. The event is free and open to the public…
