TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Twenty-six University of Alabama students have been named to the Ambassadors program in the College of Arts and Sciences for the current academic year.

The students were chosen based on their academic achievements, leadership qualities, past involvement in service oriented activities and personal interviews. More than 150 students applied for the positions. All 6,600 undergraduate students in the College are eligible to apply.

The Ambassadors represent the College to on-campus and off-campus organizations and assist the College’s staff in student recruitment, social events and community service activities.

“The Ambassadors represent the best of the best in our College,” said Susan Halliday, manager of special events and endowment in the College of Arts and Sciences and the groups’ adviser and founder. “They are selected based on character, accomplishment and leadership. We rely on them and consider them indispensable members of the dean’s office family.”

The Ambassadors program – which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year – has received University of Alabama awards for its performance in campus and charitable activities.

The Ambassadors’ past service projects include supporting the University’s Capital Campaign. They donated $1,000 to the College of Arts and Sciences Collegiate Fund Scholarship Endowment in 2008-2009.  The group has also worked to raise funds for the United Way and to assist families in need through UA’s annual Beat Auburn Beat Hunger food drive.

“The Ambassadors’ fund-raising efforts and their community service speaks volumes about the character and goal-oriented thinking of this fine group of College students,” said Dr. Robert Olin, dean of the College. “We welcome the 2009-2010 Ambassadors and look forward to their representing the College and the University with distinction.”
