September is National Preparedness Month, a time set aside each year to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies.
Throughout the month, The University of Alabama will share tips to help you prepare.
Disasters don’t wait for a convenient time. Preparing for them shouldn’t wait either. Here are 10 things you can do at little or no cost to prepare now.

- Download the UA Safety App. The app is free and is available for iOS and Android. It provides you with UA Alerts, weather information for Tuscaloosa County and an emergency contact list with one-touch dialing.
- Take a walking tour of campus to locate the nearest Storm Shelter or Best Available Refuge Area. You can use the UA Safety App for directions.
- Tune to 92.5 FM UA Info Radio for preparedness tips and to get important information during severe weather or campus emergencies.
- Create a family emergency communication plan.
- Activate the Wireless Emergency Alert setting on your mobile phone so you can receive Amber Alerts and other public safety alerts.
- Take photos and videos of your belongings before a disaster strikes for insurance purposes.
- Store important documents and valuables in a safe place.
- Take a current photo of your child or significant other before going on a trip or to large gatherings like football games.
