As of Aug. 18, The University of Alabama has confirmed 21 students who are exhibiting flu-like symptoms. The CDC and the Alabama Department of Public Health continue to recommend that H1N1 be treated just like seasonal flu.
If you have flu-like symptoms or think you may have been exposed to swine flu, please call 205-348-9184 during normal Student Health Center hours (8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday; and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on the weekend). And, continue to practice these basic steps to help limit the spread of flu or any virus:
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners also are effective.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
- Clean and sterilize contaminated surfaces.
The University has a comprehensive plan in place to deal with H1N1 if it becomes a more serious disease. For more information on swine flu, visit http://www.prepare.ua.edu or http://www.cchs.ua.edu/shc/.
