Thanks to a partnership between University of Alabama Libraries and Cambridge University Press, UA faculty will no longer be charged a fee for publishing articles in any of the nearly 400 open access academic journals Cambridge publishes.
The agreement is in place until Dec. 31, 2023.
“Instead of a scholar having to pay between $600 to $4,500, or up to $5,200 for gold access, to have his or her work published in one of the 371 journals Cambridge publishes, we’ve made it free to them,” said Michael Pearce, director of strategic engagement for UA Libraries.
UA faculty will also gain free access to journals already published by Cambridge University Press.
Pearce said Cambridge is one of the largest open-access publishers and has journals spanning nearly every discipline from science, engineering, medicine, social science to the humanities.
All papers will be vetted by the peer review process traditionally employed by these journals, ensuring the quality and reliability the research community has come to expect from Cambridge.
“So with open access journals being available online when other journals are normally behind a paywall, this increases the opportunity for our scholars to have their work known because everyone can access it without having to pay for it,” Pearce said. “And now they don’t have to pay for it either.”
