Jiyoung Lee, an assistant professor in the University of Alabama’s College of Communication and Information Sciences, has studied online emotional contagion. She argues virtual discussions with friends can be positive if accurate information is shared and people are reassured.

Dr. Robert Osburn is an endocrinologist who recently joined the University of Alabama’s College of Community Health Sciences, and he says his specialty gets more important for potential patients as they age. “An endocrine organ is a gland in the body that secretes a substance into the blood that affects something somewhere else in the body,” Osburn said.
Event raises money for church’s food pantry

Grace Presbyterian Church will host the 12th annual Empty Bowls fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday. The event, which raises money for the church’s food pantry, will be held in the fellowship hall at Grace Presbyterian, 113 Hargrove Road. For $14, participants can select a hand-crafted bowl created by local artisans. A meal of soup, water, and bread will be served. Organizers chose this meal as a way to remind participants about people in the community who go to sleep without a meal at night.
