UA nursing student juggles family, academic responsibilities
Tuscaloosa News – April 29
This weekend, a Gadsden native is set to graduate from the University of Alabama Capstone College of Nursing with a 4.0 grade point average. Kiari Kinnie won’t claim that success just yet, though. Until her final grades are tallied up a few days before commencement, her GPA sits at a 3.998. Still, Kinnie has accomplished much in her time at UA. In addition to her classes, she has worked two jobs, served on a mission trip to Africa, and raised a son she had freshman year.

UA graduation ceremonies take place this weekend

More than 6,000 degrees will be awarded this weekend during the University of Alabama’s spring commencement exercises. All colleges and schools, including the UA School of Law, will participate in five total ceremonies beginning Friday and ending Sunday afternoon. All ceremonies will be held at Coleman Coliseum.

A University of Alabama survey says business leaders around the state are pretty pumped about our economy. The Center for Business and Economic Research shows us scoring high in areas like expectations for sales, hiring, capital expenditures and profits.

Problems with enforcing the law when it comes to drivers passing stopped school buses

But the University of Alabama‘ s Center for Advanced Public Safety says only 1,064 citations were issued for illegal passes of stopped school buses in all of 2018. According to school transportation officials, most Alabama school buses don’t have exterior cameras to catch automobile drivers passing illegally. When the bus driver that flashes his lights, stops, and extends led to stop sign.

Crashes at Railroad Crossings

The University of Alabama says 55 crashes happened in Alabama. Last year the number of drivers who crashed after going around crossing arms hit a 10-year high.
 
AL bill would take guns away from people deemed dangerous
American Military News – April 29
The Alabama legislature is considering a bill that would allow people to be stripped of their right to purchase or possess guns if they are deemed by a court to be a danger to themselves or others …Frederick Vars, a professor at the Culverhouse School of Law at the University of Alabama, said research on “red flag” bills suggests they are effective at preventing gun suicides. He pointed to a study on Connecticut’s “red flag” law which was enacted in 1999. The study suggested one suicide was averted for every 10 to 11 gun seizure cases.

College students earn honors

Universities to begin Industrial Hemp growing, study

This planting season, there’s a new crop in fields – Industrial Hemp. Both farmers and universities across the state are working with the state to produce and study the crop.
Troy University is one of several that applied to harvest the plant this growing season through the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries … In addition to Troy, ASU, Tuskegee, Alabama A&M, and the University of Alabama were also approved.

America’s Warrior Partnership Reports Growth of Military Veteran Service Programs

America’s Warrior Partnership, a national veteran-serving nonprofit, today announced that 2018 marked a year of significant growth for the nationwide impact of its initiatives, which focus on empowering communities to empower veterans. The nonprofit’s programs served 8,345 warriors over the course of the year, which is a 13 percent increase compared to 2017 … Conducted in partnership with The University of Alabama and funded by a $2.9-million grant from the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation, the study has launched across 13 states and will conclude in 2021.
