BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Children’s of Alabama honored The University of Alabama Dance Marathon program today for donating more than $1 million to the hospital over a seven-year period by presenting the organization with a recognition plaque on the Pillars of the Community display in the hospital.
The UADM joins the ranks of only 41 other donors in the hospital’s 107-year history. No other student-led organization has made such a huge impact for Children’s in such a short period of time. UADM is a Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMN Hospitals) dance marathon program uniting college, university and high school students across North America.
“We are amazed by the work the students at The University of Alabama have put in to their dance marathon program over the past seven years,” said Emily Hornak, director of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Cause Marketing and Corporate Partnerships at Children’s of Alabama. “Not only are these students attending classes, but they spend their spare time raising funds and creating awareness for Children’s of Alabama. It truly is amazing, and we are excited to honor them with a permanent fixture in our hospital.”
Last year, the student-led organization had more than 1,500 student participants in the program and raised $341,000 for Children’s. The organization encompasses the spirit of philanthropy throughout campus and across a diverse cross-section of students from all different backgrounds, academic programs, and years of study.
Representatives from UADM were joined by UA President Stuart R. Bell for the pillar presentation.
“We are always amazed at the dedication and effort our UADM students put into their events each year,” said Courtney Thomas, director of UA’s Center for Service and Leadership. “But more importantly, our students spend countless hours building relationships with Children’s of Alabama Miracle Kids and their families and provide encouragement when they need it most. It is a privilege to serve alongside such committed and engaged citizens who use their voices for good.”
