Homes more affordable here than in last 5 years
Huntsville Times – June 26
…The Alabama Center for Real Estate reported Thursday that a family earning the Huntsville area’s median family income of $67,500 may be able to afford a home costing more than twice the median home price of $141,667 during the quarter. The real estate center at the University of Alabama reported an affordability index of 227.2 during the first quarter, up nearly 17 percent from the fourth quarter…Grayson Glaze, the center’s director, said the rise in affordability, combined with low interest rates and the federal tax credit for first-time buyers, resulted in an 8.9 percent increase in sales between April and May, a rate that is typical for this time of year.  “Although home sales are anticipated to continue below monthly norms for the foreseeable future, greater affordability and the first-time home buyer tax credit are beginning to have a favorable impact on demand as the market enters the summer buying season,” Glaze said in the report.
