Each semester, The University of Alabama holds Nyansapo, which is a kente robing ceremony for African-American students.
Nyansapo provides a culturally framed opportunity for graduates and their families to celebrate.
Nyansapo is also a time for graduates and their families to share in the student’s accomplishments.
For the past three years, the event has been sponsored by the UA Black Faculty and Staff Association, with support from the provost’s and president’s offices.
The occasion marks a sense of community students enjoyed during their time at The University of Alabama.
Students represent various campus organizations with their stoles.
Students wait to line up for the ceremony.
On our campus, the kente stole is placed around the neck of the students by a parent or loved one.
Students and families enjoyed a reception after the event.
The ceremony was held prior to commencement.
