High school students get early look at rural healthcare careers
Thirty-eight high school students from rural Alabama spent part of their summer at The University of Alabama exploring healthcare careers that can make a meaningful difference in their communities.
Why This Matters: Through the Rural Health Scholars, Rural Dental Health Scholars and the Medical Opportunities and Outreach in Rural Education Scholars programs, all part of CCHS’s Rural Health Leaders Pipeline, the students spent five weeks on the UA campus taking college courses for credit, shadowing physicians and learning how to prepare to enter health professions education and training.

UAPD chief graduates from FBI National Academy
UA Police Department Chief Scott Thurmond is among 255 law enforcement officers who recently graduated from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, marking a significant professional achievement and reflecting UAPD’s commitment to leadership and excellence in public safety.
Why This Matters: Thurmond completed the 298th session of the prestigious academy, which brought together law enforcement leaders from 46 states, the District of Columbia, and more than two dozen countries. The class also included representatives from military organizations and federal civilian agencies, providing a diverse environment for learning and collaboration.
Summer program prepares future rural physicians
The College of Community Health Sciences’ Tuscaloosa Rural Pre-Medical Internship is celebrating its fifth year of preparing future rural physicians through clinical experiences, skills training and mentorship.
Why This Matters: Established in 2021 as part of the CCHS Rural Health Leaders Pipeline, TRPI was created to encourage university students from rural Alabama to pursue careers in medicine and return to practice in their communities.
