As part of continued efforts to effectively steward institutional resources to support the University’s mission of preparing students to be the leaders and innovators of the future, a project is underway to realign appropriate technology professionals across campus under the UA Office of Information Technology.
“Technology and innovation are key to driving our University mission now and in the future,” said UA President Peter Mohler. “As evidenced by recent disruptive cybersecurity incidents across higher education, it is critical that UA has enterprise-wide alignment on our information technology, data and systems infrastructure.”
Central alignment aims to improve efficiency and consistency in technology support, strengthen security and compliance, and help ensure students, faculty and staff receive efficient and sustainable IT support.
“Thoughtfully aligning technology resources across campus strengthens the University’s ability to steward institutional resources while fostering long-term operational sustainability and effectiveness,” said Dan Layzell, executive vice president, chief operating officer and treasurer. “This approach helps build a more coordinated and scalable technology delivery and support model for the future.”
The transition period is planned to take about 18 to 24 months through a measured, unit-by-unit approach to ensure each area’s unique needs are understood and met. The reorganization of technology professionals is similar to the recent financial organizational realignment undertaken by the Division of Finance and Operations.
“Strategically aligning information technology resources across campus enhances effective technology support services for the University’s operations and institutional priorities,” said Mike Shelton, chief information officer. “The realignment will strengthen IT services through consistent practices and processes so unit leaders can focus on education, research and service.”
As a result of this initiative, campus units will have easier access to campuswide support for technology requirements. IT services and support will continue uninterrupted during the transition, provided by both the UA OIT and unit IT professionals.
Employees affected by the change will continue to perform much of the same work supporting their colleges and divisions. Areas not involved include many auxiliary units, web content managers and grant-funded units.
