Some students may not realize some of UA’s most valuable resources are right at their fingertips. From free tutoring and writing help to nutrition counseling, service opportunities and mental health support, these convenient, on-campus services can make a big difference in student life.
Some services are completely free for students and others carry a small fee, but all are designed to support students in meaningful ways. Using them can improve academic performance, physical health, social engagement and overall well-being at the Capstone.
Writing Help
Struggling with an essay or lab report? The Writing Center offers free one-on-one consultations in person or online to help with class assignments, résumés or graduate school applications.
Tutoring and Academic Support
For more general academic help, the Capstone Center for Student Success Learning Commons provides peer tutoring, academic coaching and Supplemental Instruction. Whether you need a quick study session, a one-on-one appointment for a tough class or advice on time management, the center is there to help students build confidence and stay on track.
Mental Health and Well-being
On the mental health side, the Counseling Center offers individual appointments, single-session consultations and free support groups. Workshops such as the Mind Matters series are also available to help students manage stress, anxiety and other challenges of college life.
Nutrition and Health Support
When it comes to physical health, the Nutrition Clinic at the UA Student Health Center and Pharmacy provides individual counseling sessions with a registered dietitian for personalized nutrition guidance. The sessions include a full nutrition assessment and body composition analysis, and cover a variety of areas, including improved eating habits, weight management, eating disorders, and wellness, sports, and performance nutrition. This service is not covered by insurance, but fees can be billed to student accounts.
Students with food allergies or special diet needs can turn to Bama Dining for support. Dining hall managers and the dining services coordinator can work with students to answer questions about ingredients, suggest safe options and make meal adjustments. A special diet accommodation form is also available for those who need more tailored help.
Connecting with the Local Community
If you want to give back, the Center for Service and Leadership connects students with local volunteer opportunities through its Serving Bama portal and hosts service events throughout the year. It is an easy way to get involved in the Tuscaloosa community while meeting new people.
