The University of Alabama Sailing Club provides students a distinctive opportunity to engage with an uncommon and enriching sport while fostering community and building confidence on the water.
A Community Built Around Sailing
Sailing is the activity or sport of propelling a boat using the wind’s power through sails. It involves using sails to catch the wind and navigate a boat across water, relying on wind patterns and maritime navigation skills. Sailing can be a recreational activity or a competitive sport.
“The primary goal of the club is to bring people together and encourage them to enjoy time on the water,” said Stephanie Griffin, a sophomore marketing major and club president. “The club also offers a welcoming environment for those who want to relax, appreciate the natural surroundings, and experience the unique sensation of being propelled by the wind alone. There is truly nothing quite like the feeling of the wind on your face while sailing.”
The club holds its practices at the Tuscaloosa Sailing Club, where members sail Flying Scots and Sunfish boats on the picturesque Lake Tuscaloosa. The club embraces all levels of experience, from complete beginners to seasoned sailors.
Commitment to Education, Community, and Safety
Griffin, who has competed in national and international sailing events and holds certification as a sailing coach, emphasized the club’s commitment to educating new members.
“We begin by familiarizing newcomers with the fundamentals on the dock, including how to rig the boat, the different components, and basic steering techniques. Afterward, members get hands-on experience under the supervision of more experienced sailors to ensure safety and confidence on the water.”
Craig Knudson, the club’s vice president and a sophomore studying cybersecurity, reflected on his own learning experience.
“I had no prior sailing experience before joining,” he said. “Initially, I spent time observing more experienced sailors. Over time, the knowledge and skills began to come together, and eventually, it all clicked. I’m still progressing, but it’s been a rewarding journey.”
Knudson also highlighted the camaraderie fostered within the club.
“The most valuable aspect is the relationships I’ve built. I’ve gained a deeper understanding not only of sailing itself but also of the entire process — from transporting and rigging the boats to sailing. It’s been an educational and enjoyable experience.”
While the club is developing its competitive racing program, Griffin underscored that the club accommodates a variety of interests.
“For those seeking a leisurely experience, especially during calm summer days when the wind is minimal, the club provides an excellent opportunity to relax on the boat or swim.”

Sailing’s Personal Impact
“Sailing has been an important part of my life,” Griffin said. “My parents met through sailing, and I’ve been involved with the sport since childhood. I feel privileged to lead a club centered around something I’m passionate about and to have found such a strong community here at The University of Alabama.”
The UA Sailing Club offers students a rare and accessible chance to engage with a sport typically associated with coastal regions, while cultivating independence, challenge and a sense of belonging.
“For anyone interested in sailing but unsure about trying it, I would encourage them to give it a chance. You won’t know what it’s like until you try, and the worst that could happen is getting a little wet,” Griffin said with a smile.
