Renowned Translational Scientist Offered Fulbright Scholar Award

Dr. M.N.V. Ravi Kumar, Distinguished University Research Professor with The University of Alabama College of Community Health Sciences’ department of translational science and medicine, was selected for the Fulbright-Nehru Scholar Award that will allow him to conduct vital research at the National Institute of Nutrition, or NIN, in Hyderabad, India.

Kumar, a world-renowned leader in the field of translational science for medicine design, plans to work with Dr. G. Bhanuprakash Reddy’s laboratory to develop advanced formulations of urolithin A, a natural compound known for its typically low absorption in the body.

“Our novel formulations have already shown promise in various disease conditions,” said Kumar. “During my time at NIN, we will expand this research to test these formulations in comorbid metabolic disease models.”

In addition to his research, Kumar intends to develop and teach a customized drug delivery course at NIN and share his research at several planned seminars and workshops across India.

“The Fulbright-Nehru experience is truly pivotal for my research and scholarship, marking my first dedicated work visit to India since I left in 2008,” said Kumar. “Direct collaboration with NIN will allow us to evaluate our cutting-edge technologies in a crucial new context, directly influencing the direction and scope of our work.

“This synergy between The University of Alabama and NIN’s unique expertise will enrich our research outcomes and push the boundaries of what we can achieve.”

Kumar hopes his time in India will not only benefit his work but also the University’s international research endeavors.

“I envision this engagement not only elevating my own work but also opening doors for UA, leading to exciting new collaborative projects and potentially even student and faculty exchanges in the future,” said Kumar. “I’m incredibly excited about the potential of this Fulbright-Nehru experience to significantly advance both my research and the collaborative ties between the University and institutions in India.”
