University Singers Perform Internationally for First Time in 14 Years

The University of Alabama’s premiere vocal ensemble, University Singers, completed an international tour over spring break, performing at three prestigious venues in Germany.

“Throughout their history, University Singers has toured nationally and internationally,” said Dr. Morgan Luttig, director of choral activities, noting that this is the first international tour for a UA vocal group in 14 years. “Made up of undergraduate and graduate singers representing over twenty academic disciplines, University Singers serves as an ambassador for the University both on and off campus.”

Forty student singers performed at Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche in Berlin, Providenzkirche in Heidelberg, and Nikolaikirche in Leipzig, where Baroque composer, Johann Sebastian Bach, once worked.

The ensemble’s set was titled “Double Helix.” The digital program includes notes on the program that explain the story behind the repertoire.

“In Berlin, we had the opportunity to collaborate with a local university choral ensemble, the Humboldt University Chamber Choir,” Luttig said. “In addition to performing our full set, we also performed a joint piece with the local choir.”
