Alabama Barbell, a student organization founded to create a community centered on powerlifting and bodybuilding, has quickly become a space for students to grow physically and personally stronger.
Operating out of Strong Inc., a local weight-lifting gym, the club welcomes lifters of all skill levels, from beginners to seasoned athletes.
“We’ve had new members join us who have never lifted a barbell and others who’ve been lifting for years,” said Tanner Jacobi, the organization’s president. “We aim to foster growth and encouragement for everyone wanting to join our club.”
Each week, the club gathers for workouts that blend intense training with a strong sense of camaraderie. The focus isn’t just on lifting heavy weights; it’s about lifting up each other. Whether someone is deadlifting for the first time or chasing a personal best, the club creates an environment where every lift is celebrated and everyone’s progress is respected.
“When you come to practice, you’ll see how encouraging we are as a group,” said member Kristen Palmer. “We’re constantly screaming for each other, offering support and pushing each other to do our best. We’re all friends, and there are no strangers here.”
In addition to the weekly workouts, the club participates in regional collegiate lifting competitions each year. They’re gearing up to compete in the collegiate nationals this April, hoping to take home some hardware and make their mark on the national stage. These events allow members to showcase their hard work in front of other lifters, pushing their limits.
“Competing together as a team is so exciting,” Palmer said. “It’s a chance for us to show off what we’ve accomplished and share our love for the sport with others. The energy is incredible.”
What truly defines Alabama Barbell is its spirit. It’s not about who lifts the most or who has the most experience. It’s about helping each other become their best versions, no matter where they start.
“It’s not about individual success,” Jacobi noted. “It’s about lifting each other up. We want to build a team of lifters who are passionate about fitness and who are there for each other.”
But the club’s goals go beyond developing its members. Alabama Barbell is committed to spreading the passion for physical fitness to fellow students. They’re working hard to inspire others to explore lifting and bodybuilding, hoping to spark new interest by lifting weights and building even something stronger than themselves.
