Autonomous Bus Safety 

With a grant from the Federal Transit Administration and the United States Department of Transportation, The University of Alabama is gearing up for a $3 million project to develop advanced driver assistance systems for large transit buses. 

Why This Matters: The project will bring automated safety features available only in personal vehicles to mass transit, beginning with Crimson Ride. Perrone Robotics, Inc., a leader in commercial automated and autonomous vehicle technology, is a key partner on the project. 

Record Donation to National Alumni Association 

UA’s National Alumni Association has received an $8 million gift from the estate of Bill Decas, the largest single gift the NAA has ever received. 

Why This Matters: The gift will enhance four previously created in-state scholarships and create a fifth endowed scholarship for out-of-state students. 

NOAA Hollings Scholars 

UA students Raeed Kabir and Blake Yuenger are the recipients of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship

Why This Matters: The Hollings Scholarship includes a two-year academic award of $9,500 per year and a 10-week, full-time, paid summer internship opportunity at a NOAA facility. Scholars also receive funding to present their NOAA research projects at two national scientific conferences. 

University Club Reopens 

UA and Invited, the nation’s largest owner and operator of private membership clubs, have reopened the historic University Club after a more than $17 million renovation. 

Why This Matters: The University Club features several reimagined spaces including casual and fine dining, outdoor veranda, conference rooms and private event spaces. The club will also introduce new programming such as game day tailgates, brunches and holiday events. 

UA Museums Summer Activities 

If you’re looking for family fun with enriching learning opportunities, UA Museums offers activities throughout the summer at several locations. 

Why This Matters: Programming will explore a variety of subject areas that will appeal to many.
