Lightning from a thunderstorm.

Thunderstorms: Stay Informed, Stay Safe

Summer in Alabama brings hot temperatures and the chance for thunderstorms.

These storms can be a powerful force of nature, bringing with them intense rain, strong winds, and lightning strikes.

It’s important to be prepared and know how to stay safe when a thunderstorm is approaching. Here are some essential safety tips to keep in mind:

  • Stay Informed: Before heading outdoors, check the weather forecast to be aware of any potential thunderstorm warnings or watches in your area. The UA Safety app provides weather information for the campus area and Tuscaloosa County. If you’re planning outdoor activities, reschedule them for a safer time.
  • Seek Shelter Indoors: When a thunderstorm is on the horizon, find a safe place indoors away from windows and doors. A sturdy building or a car with a metal roof can provide protection from lightning strikes and flying debris. Remember, when thunder roars go indoors.
  • Avoid Electrical Appliances: During a thunderstorm, unplug and avoid using electrical appliances, as lightning can travel through power lines and cause damage.
  • Stay Away from Water: Water is an excellent conductor of electricity, so it’s important to stay away from pools, lakes, and other bodies of water, as they can become highly dangerous during lightning storms. You should also avoid bathing, showering, or using sinks during a thunderstorm.
  • Stay Clear of Tall Objects and Open Spaces: Avoid standing near tall objects such as trees, flagpoles, or metal structures, as they can attract lightning. Similarly, open spaces like fields or golf courses should be avoided. Seek shelter in low-lying areas, if possible.
  • Wait for the Storm to Pass: Thunderstorms usually last for a relatively short period, so it’s best to wait indoors until the storm has completely passed. Keep monitoring weather updates through a battery-powered radio or a reliable weather app.

Remember, thunderstorms should be taken seriously. By staying informed, seeking shelter, and following these safety tips, you can minimize the risks associated with thunderstorms and keep yourself and your loved ones safe.

Safety Reminder: UA Alert System Test

If there are no thunderstorms in the area, the University will test its emergency notification systems, including UA Alerts, the public address system and digital signage, Wednesday, July 5, at 11:55 a.m.
