The second campuswide CHIME IN workplace experience survey of UA faculty and staff in four years has highlighted continued successes and opportunities for ongoing improvement.
The 2022 CHIME IN survey was conducted March 23-April 5 and is a continuation of the initial effort to measure change and assess engagement since 2018. The first CHIME IN workplace experience survey launched in 2018, and many employees have participated in a variety of work-life balance initiatives resulting from those earlier survey responses.
Both iterations of the CHIME IN survey represent a culture of continuous improvement based on UA’s Strategic Plan as it relates to the goal of fostering an environment to support outstanding faculty and staff. Both the 2018 and 2022 surveys were administered by ModernThink as part of the Great Colleges to Work For project.
Results from the 2022 CHIME IN survey are available for stakeholders on the survey website. CHIME IN shows faculty and staff continue to recognize the meaningfulness of their work, the welcoming campus environment, how UA contributes to its surrounding communities, and supervisor support for work/life balance. The areas of compensation, institutional planning participation and employee recognition programs offer the most opportunities for improvement.
ModernThink also reports some similar noteworthy overall declines among all survey participants nationwide, including concerns of compensation and institutional planning. The trend reflects the instability of recent times and events.
Units for which survey results are available have been encouraged to submit plans to address opportunities identified in their operational areas. Executive Vice President and Provost Jim Dalton has charged college/school deans to identify action items for follow-up to the survey. The provost and deans will review progress toward achieving these action items on an annual basis.
The ModernThink survey instrument is used to provide insight into 11 core survey dimensions and UA added a twelfth dimension specific to this university:
- Collaboration
- Communication
- Confidence in Senior Leadership
- Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging
- Faculty & Staff Well-being
- Faculty-Only Statement
- Job Satisfaction & Support
- Mission & Pride
- Performance Management
- Professional Development
- Supervisors/Department Chair
- UA Custom Statements
The UA survey achieved a response rate of 43% — 3,060 responses overall, slightly down from the 47% rate in 2018. The results available on the website also compare UA results to similar surveys taken at southern peer institutions.
