Elections, Recognitions and Awards

a collage of faculty headshotsDr. Wendy Castenell, assistant professor, department of art and art history, was re-elected for a second three-year term to the board of directors of the Nineteenth-Century Studies Association.

The American Society of Safety Professionals Region IV Awards and Recognition Committee selected ASSP professional member Randy Easterling, CIH, CSP, for its 2020-2021 Safety Professional of the Year. Easterling serves as safety program supervisor for UA’s SafeState Consultation Program.

The National Science Foundation awarded more than $520,000 to Dr. James Harris, assistant professor, department of chemical and biological engineering; and Dr. Martin Bakker, associate professor, department of chemistry and biochemistry, to study the incorporation of phthalocyanine dyes into zeolites and their use to the oxidation of light alkenes.

Dr. M.N.V. Ravi Kumar, professor, College of Community Health Sciences, and director of UA’s Drug Delivery Group, was included on the Medicine Maker 2021 Power List, recognized for his work in the category of Small Molecules. The list annually acknowledges those who contribute to the development and manufacture of new medicine products. Kumar was cited for developing technologies that facilitate drug repurposing. Kumar also leads the biomedical sciences initiative of UA’s Alabama Life Research Institute.

Exhibitions and Creative Activity

Associate Professor of Art Sarah Marshall’s new fabric work, “Past Crimes,” was juried into the 27th Parkside National Print Exhibition, University of Wisconsin-Parkside.

Wade MacDonald, assistant professor, department of art and art history, had a solo exhibition at the Biggin Gallery at Auburn University. His work is also included in the invitational exhibition “Vase” at Alma’s RVA in Richmond, Virginia, and featuring prominent potters from across the country.

Christopher Jordan, associate professor, department of art and art history, published a book featuring his photography and the practice of meditation, “Nowhere in Place,” (GFT Publishing, 2021).

Amy F. Kimpel, assistant professor of clinical legal instruction, published “Violent Videos: Criminal Defense in a Digital Age,” 37 Georgia State University Law Review 305-425 (2021).

Ronald J. Krotoszynski, John S. Stone Chairholder of Law, co-authored “Against Congressional Case-Snatching,” 62 William and Mary Law Review 791-870 (2021).
