UA Students Win Gilman International Scholarships

  • January 28th, 2021

Three University of Alabama students have been awarded the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to participate in study abroad programs during the 2021-2022 academic year.

“The Gilman International Scholarship is specifically designed to increase access to study abroad by supporting students who might not otherwise participate due to financial constraints,” said Carolina Robinson, director of Education Abroad at UA’s Capstone International Center. “Since 2012, we have had 54 winners and 11 alternates for the award. We are so proud of Bailee, Lauren and Mariah for winning scholarships this year.”

Scholarship winners are selected by the Institute of International Education through the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs in the U.S. Department of State.

Gilman Scholarship Recipients

Mariah Muhammad, a sophomore majoring in international studies, minoring in Korean, from Hoover, Alabama, was selected to study in South Korea. Muhammad also received Gilman’s Critical Need Language Award, which offers additional scholarship funds to study critical languages while abroad.

Lauren Baltimore, a junior majoring in chemical engineering, from Columbus, Ohio, was selected to study in Ireland.

Bailee Hughes, a sophomore majoring in psychology, minoring in women’s studies and African American studies, from Lexington, Kentucky, was selected to study in the United Kingdom.

In addition, Taylor Daubin, a junior majoring in psychology, minoring in art history, from Brentwood, California, was selected as an alternate for the award to study in Italy.

Gilman awardees receive up to $5,000 to apply toward their study abroad program costs, giving them the opportunity to gain a better understanding of other cultures, countries, languages and economies. Critical Need Language Awards provide up to an additional $3,000.

A new Gilman application cycle is now open, and any Pell-grant eligible students interested in studying abroad, or in a virtual global opportunity, are encouraged to participate in a Gilman Scholarship Workshop, which happens weekly.
