The University of Alabama’s Air Force ROTC held a commissioning ceremony in mid-August.
Stanley Hunter, of Birmingham, was commissioned as a second lieutenant. His dad, Greg Stanley, a retired Air Force officer, swore him in.
Lt. Col. Myla Abejuela, UA’s Air Force ROTC detachment commander, said students were commissioned as officers in individual ceremonies to mitigate the spread of coronavirus.
Hunter’s new rank was pinned on him by his mother, Sabrina Stanley.
Hunter’s commissioning ceremony was completed when his grandfather, John Frisk, a formerly enlisted member of the U.S. Army, saluted him. He was then given a silver dollar, a long-standing tradition, Abejuela said.
He will be stationed at Columbus Air Force Base in Mississippi for pilot training.
