Dalton Selected UA Executive Vice President and Provost

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Dr. James T. Dalton, a distinguished academic, researcher and member of the National Academy of Medicine, has been selected as the next executive vice president and provost of The University of Alabama.

Currently dean and professor in the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy, Dalton will join the UA campus Aug. 1, following UA System Board of Trustee approval.

“Dr. Dalton brings tremendous depth of knowledge and qualifications to this role,” said UA President Stuart Bell. “He garnered support from many because of his experience at leading public research universities, his stellar academic credentials and his entrepreneurial expertise. His passion for teaching and student success align with our University’s values. He was selected from an impressively strong pool of candidates, and we are honored to have him join The University of Alabama leadership team.”

Recently elected to the National Academy of Medicine, Dalton is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists.

A prolific inventor and entrepreneur, Dalton is named on over 400 U.S. and international awarded and pending patent applications and for seven years served as chief scientific officer and vice president of preclinical research and development at GTx, Inc., a company that developed his technology and patents.

He has co-authored over 300 original abstracts and peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts. While serving as dean at Michigan, he led the college in developing its first diversity, equity and inclusion strategic plan, redesigned and expanded its bachelor of science program, and doubled its research expenditures.

Dalton holds a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from the University of Cincinnati and doctorate in pharmaceutics and pharmaceutical chemistry from Ohio State University.

Dalton rose through the faculty ranks at the University of Tennessee before returning to Ohio State in 2000 to serve as professor and chair in the Division of Pharmaceutics. He left OSU in 2007 to devote time to his entrepreneurial efforts at GTx until he took the helm of UM’s College of Pharmacy in 2014.

Dalton replaces Dr. Kevin Whitaker, who served as executive vice president and provost since January 2017 and as a UA administrator and faculty member for some 30 years prior.

“I thank Dr. Whitaker for his many outstanding years of service and leadership at UA,” said Bell. “His insights, guidance and leadership have been invaluable.” Bell also expressed appreciation to the campus search committee, led by Vice President for Research and Economic Development Russ Mumper, for overseeing the national search leading to Dalton’s selection.
